How often Diesel Rates are Revised in Manipur
With the complete implementation of the Dynamic Pricing system, proposed in 2018, the fuel price (diesel and petrol) are revised daily. The rates get an update every day at 0600 hours in the morning, barring any drastic policy change or introducing new taxes. The diesel rate in Manipurstays is almost identical.
Before the DPM, the fuel rates used to be revised after a period of 15 days, when the ministry would decide on the price based on all the factors, be it foreign currency rates, or excise duty, or even domestic factors.
Factors Affecting Diesel Prices in Manipur
Crude Oil Prices: Any change in foreign crude oil prices directly impacts crude oil prices in the domestic market. This is the most fundamental reason to blame for any increase in fuel prices in India.
A rise in foreign demand, a low production rate, and any political instability in the world’s crude oil-producing countries significantly affect gasoline prices.
- Increased Demand: Financial development in the country and other developing countries has increased the demand for oil and other essential fuels.
The population of private vehicle owners has increased in recent years, leading to an increase in demand for Diesel in India, resulting in a rise in India’s Diesel rates.
- Mismatch in Supply and Demand: To meet market demands, Indian oil refinery companies face challenges because the cost input price of crude oil is high, resulting in less supply and higher demand for Diesel in the region.
When supply rises, the price of gasoline falls, and vice versa.
- Rupee to Dollar Exchange Rate: The rupee-dollar exchange rate is another crucial factor affecting India’s Diesel price.
Indian oil firms pay in dollars for oil imported from other nations, but their expenses are rupees. As a result, when the rupee falls in value, you would pay more for the USD.
- Logistics: It is a significant factor in retail fuel pricing. Diesel and petrol shipped over long distances to cities or regions farther away from depots would be more expensive than those near the oil companies’ storage areas.
State Taxes and Diesel Price in Manipur
The prices of Dieseleum products differ depending on local government policies that impose fuel taxes.
As the Indian government increases fuel tax rates, Indian oil firms increase gasoline prices to recover losses and sustain marginal profits in the Indian oil industry.
Effect of GST on Manipur Diesel Price
The term “Goods and Services Levy” (GST) is well-known these days. Last year, the Indian government unveiled a unified, streamlined tax platform. GST is levied on all customers in the area. Since diesel is not subject to the GST scheme, the new tax regime does not affect diesel pricing.
According to the state government, a 2% sales tax surcharge would also be imposed on gasoline and diesel.
The increase in fuel prices sparked uproar from the opposition party Congress, which said that the move would put people out of work.
How are Diesel Prices in Manipur Responding to GST?
The Manipur government raised Diesel and diesel taxes on Wednesday amid a nationwide lockdown and falling crude oil prices. According to them, Diesel’s litre now costs Rs 74.9 and a litre of diesel costs Rs 67.5.
“The latest tax rate for Diesel is 31%, or Rs 17.6 per litre, and 22.5 per cent, or Rs 12.5 per litre,” according to a government notification.
