What is GST?
The Goods and Services Tax, which took effect from July 1, 2017, applies to all India’s service providers, traders, and manufacturers. Taxes such as Service Tax and Excise Duty and state taxes such as Entertainment Tax, Luxury Tax, and Octroi have been merged into a single tax known as GST. GST will be charged at each stage of the supply chain, with full set-offs available.
Because the GST process is entirely online, there are no manual steps. The supply chain includes purchasing raw materials and manufacturing, selling to a wholesaler and retailer and finally selling to the end-user or customer.
What is GSTIN?
GSTIN, or Goods and Services Tax Identification Number, is a 15-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each GST-registered entity. The GST Registration Process is a simple and direct procedure that includes the creation of a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) and an Application Reference Number (ARN). When GST registration is completed, a unique GST number, known as the GSTIN, and a GST registration certificate are issued.
What is the Format of GSTIN?
- According to the Indian Census 2011, the first two digits represent the unique state code. So, for example, New Delhi’s state code is 07, while Karnataka’s is 29.
- The following 10 characters represent the taxpayer’s PAN number.
- The 13th digit represents the taxpayer’s registration number, which is the same as their PAN number.
- The 14th digit is “Z” by default for all.
- The last digit is the 15th digit, which can be either a number or an alphabet.

How to track GST numbers?
Go to the GST Portal. Select Services -> Registration -> Application Status Tracking. Fill in the CAPTCHA and enter the ARN number from your GST registration application. When you click search, the portal displays the status of your GST registration application.
How to search GST by PAN?
It is difficult to search for a GST number or GSTIN of a business using a PAN number because the country’s tax department does not currently provide such functionality. However, we continue to use trial and error to find a GST number by PAN.
For example, in a GST number, the first 2 codes are for the state, the following 10 numbers are the PAN number, and the 13th character is usually the first, while the 14th character is usually Z, and the last character can range from 0 to 9 or from A to Z.
How to verify the GST number online?
If you have recently applied for GST registration and received your new GSTIN, ensure that all of your business’s details have been correctly updated on the GST website. To verify GST details, enter your GST number on the Official GST portal page titled Search Taxpayer by GSTIN. To complete GST Number verification online, you can also use the Search Taxpayer by PAN option.
