About GST
Online GST Payment is a simple process to pay your GST returns on time.
GST stands for Goods and Service Tax is an indirect tax used on the supply of goods and services in India. It is also known as the consumption tax. It covers almost all indirect taxes except a few state taxes. It is a multistage tax as it covers every step of the production process. Though it is a consumption tax, all the other stages of taxes are refunded back to all parties except the final consumer product tax. The final consumer product tax is meant to be collected by the means of consumption. Alcoholic drinks, electricity and petroleum products tax are not covered under GST and are generally taxed by state governments individually.
The GST tax came into force on 1 July 2017. It was implemented by the One Hundred and First Amendment of the Constitution of India by the Indian Government. The GST tax then replaced other multiple taxes used by the central and state governments.
GST Tax Features
GST tax is the law set to reform how people do business and by which means the goods and services are taxed. Here is a list of people and ways the new GST tax law applies:
- A person who supplies goods and services of more than 20 lakhs value in a financial year. The person has to register themselves for supplying goods/services above that value.
- Every E-Commerce Operator
- To everyone who is making any inter-state taxable supply of goods/services.
- Taxable person.
- Non-Resident Taxable Person.
- Person supplying non branded goods/services through E-Commerce Operator.
- Input Service Distributor.
- A Person who is required to deduct/collect tax (TDS/TCS).
- An Agent or related person supplying goods.
- Person supplying online information and database access from outside India to a person residing in India.
- A person who is required to pay tax under Reserve Charge.
Online GST Payment
Mode of Payment
Following are the modes of Online GST payment that are available on the GST portal:
- Net Banking (Online)
- Debit card (Online)
- Credit Card (Online)
- Cheque/Demand Draft/Cash, also known as the Over the Counter (Offline)
- National Electronic Fund Transfer(NEFT)/Real-Time Gross Settlement(RTGS) (Offline)
Online Payment
A Taxpayer can make payments without logging in to the GST portal. From a list of banks, the GST portal allows taxpayers to pay from, the taxpayer has to choose the bank and make payment online GST payment using card facility of net banking. Once done with the GST payment, the electronic cash ledger will update simultaneously. If the taxpayer generates challan without logging in to the portal, they must finish the payment in one go.
Offline Payment
The Taxpayer can use the above modes upon generating GST Challan, before logging in to the GST Portal or even after logging in. Take a printout of the form and fill in the depositor and instrument details, sign and submit to the bank to complete the payment of GST. For Over the Counter process, banks take a day or two to complete the procedure. Once the bank completes your payment, the electronic ledger gets updates with your amount payments.
The maximum amount for an OTC payment is Rs 10,000. If the amount exceeds this limit, then the taxpayer has to go for other modes.
Another way is when the taxpayer chooses RTGS/NEFT while generating challan. First, he needs to take the printout of the challan, fill and sign the details and submit the form along with the challan to the bank. After processing, the bank provides a Unique Transaction Reference(UTR) number to the taxpayer. Afterwards, the taxpayer needs to log in to the portal to link the UTR number against the challan, and the electronic cash ledger will update the same after the online GST payment.
Steps to generate a GST Challan on the GST portal
There are two ways to generate challan, one before logging in to the GST portal or either by logging in to the GSTIN account.
Steps to generate challan before Logging in
Step 1: Go to the GST portal’s homepage.
Go to the Services > Payments > Create Challan.
Step 2: Enter the GSTIN or the ID of a temporary user or tax return preparer or UN body. Enter the captcha code.
Step 3: Enter amounts for CGST, SGST, IGST or other heads, as applicable. Thereafter, choose the relevant payment mode with bank details if applicable.
Step 4: Re-enter the GSTIN/Other ID for the Challan Generation field and click on the ‘PROCEED’ button.
Step 5: Click on the ‘DOWNLOAD’ button to download the challan that is generated.
Steps to generate challan after Logging in
Choose to generate challan after logging in to the portal, find the button to create challan on the dashboard. However, the rest of the process remains the same.
For that, he must enter the amounts in respective heads and choose the desired payment mode like Online GST payment or Offline GST payment.
Time limit to finish GST Payment
For online mode: Payment must be done immediately for pre-login challan creation for netbanking mode. Online GST payment is a reliable model for taxpayers to pay tax timely.
For offline mode: 15 days is given for offline mode.
For Net Banking:
If net banking is chosen as the mode, select the bank name and click on ‘Generate challan’.
The Common Portal Identification Number (CPIN) gets generated.
For Offline Modes:
If offline mode such as OTC or NEFT/RTGS is chosen, enter bank details where cash is deposited or remitted and click on ‘Generate challan’.
The CPIN gets generated with the challan copy and gets saved automatically.
Steps to complete GST payment at a later date
(1) To complete the payment later on against a challan earlier generated, in case of payment either through net banking or debit or credit card.
Step 1: Log in to the GST portal and go to the Services > Payments > Challan history.
Step 2: Click on the hyperlink against the appropriate CPIN listed down.
Further, select the right bank from the list of banks displayed for card payment or net banking and finish the payment.
Receipt gets generated with CIN upon successful payment. The electronic cash ledger gets updated immediately.
(2) To complete the payment later on against a challan earlier generated, in case of OTC mode of payment.
Step 1: Fill up the remaining particulars asked on challan manually with the authorised person’s signature.
Step 2: Submit the filled-in particulars, the challan copy, instruments such as cheque or DD or cash to the appropriate bank, earlier chosen while generating challan.
In a day or two, the electronic cash ledger gets updated with the payment.
(3) To complete the payment later on against a challan earlier generated, in case of RTGS/NEFT.
Step 1: Fill up the remaining particulars asked on challan, depositor details, cheque details and manual sign, including RTGS/NEFT,
Step 2: Submit the filled-in particulars, the challan copy, cheque and mandate to the remitting bank earlier chosen while generating challan. Instead of a cheque, one can use the account debit facility too.
Within two hours, the bank will process this. The taxpayer will receive the Unique Transaction Number (UTR) and Challan Identification Number (CIN) on the registered e-mail ID or mobile number.
Step 3: Log in to the GST portal, go to challan history.
Step 4: Click on the hyperlink against the appropriate CPIN. Enter the UTR number and click on ‘Link UTR’. The electronic cash ledger gets updated.
